Did anyone else notice that mma fighter Houston Alexander was sponsored by Delicious Vinyl the other night during his UFC fight against Kimbo Slice? Nice idea to get some exposure by Delicious Vinyl, especially considering everyone and their grandma watches when Kimbo is in the ring. I usually don't like her voice much, but over this beat there isn't much that won't sound good. This one has been out for a bit, but it definately got slept on.

Just picked up the new Wale LP, and although there were a few singles off the album that have gotten a lot of play, the rest of the tracks are where the quality is. Wale reps the DC/VA/MD hard throughout, but one of my favorite tracks is this one. Finally, Canadien MC K-OS just released his newest album YES! and it's definately impressive. For some classic K-OS just check out the b-boy anthem "Superstar pt. 0", but for now here is the first track off the new album which I would put up there within the top 5 tracks I've heard all year. Highly recommended for late night destruction.

Rapper du jour Lil Wayne seems to be on every track on the radio these days, and honestly nothing on the radio now is good. I'd never been a big fan of Wayne, but like a lot of people, I became curious about his last album "Tha Carter III" after songs that were leaking on the internet sounded like something new. The album itself turned out not to be the album that would change music forever, but you can't turn your back on Wayne that quickly. Truth is, Wayne isn't at his best when he's on a club track hook, or when he makes a guest appearance on a track to give a new artist credibility... but rather when he makes songs that he knows will never get air time. Lil Wayne may just be the greatest rapper alive... but only when he doesn't try to be. Check out these two tracks if you don't believe me, and yes mom... this is what the kids are (or at least should be) listening to these days.

This ones pretty much a classic by now for the second generation Bmore club tracks. You've really gotta love everything about it... from the actual track, to the cheesy high-school production quality video, to the crazylegs breakdown at the end, and the Baltimore City sights. Makes me miss East Baltimore St. on the park, and Charles St. & North Ave. Keep your back to the street lights boppers, and keep this one on repeat.

It's finally official, the wife and I have bought a house here in Ft. Lauderdale. Now, it might not look like much, but consider that what we paid for this little pueblo, we could be living in a literal mansion somewhere else outside of south Florida... but really, why would I want a huge house in some hillbilly village when I could live a mile from the beach? The inside is amazing and with a few small improvements on the outside, we should have it looking like the set to Biggie's 'Juicy' video in no time. We're moving in August 15th so re-up and get ready for the grand openning party... oh, and somebody call Puffy.

Strange things going on in northern UK these days. A new type of music called donk has popped up in some of the poorer neighborhoods, but is still virtually unknown anywhere outside of that area. Somewhere around 150 bpms, it's been called the absolute bottom of British musical culture. Terrible? Yes. Catchy? Definately. Worth checking out piece vbs.tv did on it, for some reason the whole thing just reminds me of New Jersey.

I was going to include these tracks as part of my earlier post about music I've been listening to lately, but I really think this group deserves a blog all to themselves. Everything about the Danish group 'Private' would make you believe that they were straight out of 1983. From their look, to their sound, and even the cheesy video dance moves... how could they not be. Here's the thing though... their album "My Secret Lover" didn't come out in the 80's... or the 90's... but rather 2007! Whoever said "they just don't make em like they used to" has obviously never heard of Private. Honestly the entire album is dripping with 80's-synth goodness, worthy of an entire VH1 special, but the true standout tracks worth checking out are "We Got Some Breaking Up To Do", "Crucify My Heart" , and the title track "My Secret Lover." Highly recommended.

It's been a bit since I've posted what I've been listening to lately, so I set the ipod on shuffle and here's what I got. Click the hyperlinks to check out the track...
1) House of House "Rushing To Paradise" An epic evolving house track that clocks in somewhere around fourteen minutes, but amazing from start to finish.
2) Holy Fuck "Lovely Allen" I caught these guys a few months back openning for Tricky and I have to say that I considered them just another squelchy indie band before they played this gem to finish the set. If I had to descibe it in words, I'd say that it'll probably be the song playing as the sun rises on our last day on earth.
3) Holliewood "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" This one's a bit harder, but you've gotta love how much New Yorkers love where they're from. This track was found on a Trouble & Bass mixtape with some heavy dubstep riding overtop, but the original is just as good.
4) Bingo Players "Get Up" (Diplo remix) Not much to say on this one, just Diplo destroying another track. Reminds me of an early 90's Long Island club track, this one sticks in my head for days.
5) Deadmau5 "Brazil" (second edit) First let me say that I'm not a huge fan of Deadmau5. It's just not the sort of stuff that I would typically listen to, but you've definately gotta respect what he's done this year alone, and this track is a great example. This one's a perfect sunrise track, and I've gotta give it to Deadmau5 for taking a bit of a chance on this B-side gem, nice work all around.
6) Dre Skull "I Want You" Honestly, I wasn't sure about this one at first because of the robot voice thing going on, but after a few listens I haven't taken it off repeat. The 12" features remixes by DJs du jour AC Slater and the young french buck Bobmo, but for my money it's definately the Dre Skull remix that is worth going right to. Yes, you read that right, Dre Skull remixes his own track and gives it sort of a jack feel, definately recommended for those times where you just need to get nutzo. Sorry no audio on this one, check it out at turntablelab though.

It arrived today. A flat rectangular brown box postmarked from the UK. Inside was the record I've been lusting over and searching the world for for the past few years. The T2 Ep release by Nocturnal Dubs which has the track "Saving All My Love." (Check the earlier post.) Ahh zen. It came about when I came across someone online who once worked for the record label that released this extremely limited edition little gem, and I convinced him using begging and some dollar signs to do some digging for me in their vaults. Weeks later it's here and it's just as good as I'd imagined. Most people would ask why I wouldn't just download the song, but those people are missing the point. I am Captain Ahab and that little slab of vinyl was my Moby Dick... but I digress. SO, the question is, what now. Well, the other night, after leaving the Trouble & Bass party early because of a rogue smoke machine that was trying to end our existance prematurely, my good friend Flo and I stumbled upon a Stones Throw party in Miami with none other than Dam Funk mixing... which is were I heard "Starlight" by Index. An old funk track from 1981, this one grabbed my attention right away, and I knew I'd have to have it. Much to the annoyance of my wife, Captain Ahab sails again.

Now, let me start by saying that my wife is amazing on many different levels. She's smart, funny, gorgeous, and she burps better than most guys. Another great thing about her is that she is unbelievably thoughtful. She always out-does herself during the holidays or for my birthday, and this year was no exception. For my birthday a few weeks back, Kristen found and purchased an original signed print of an amazing picture by one of my favorite artists Kozyndan. I've always loved the asian style of using watercolors and ink, and Kozyndan incorporates his own style on this one by adding his signature rabbits. An amazing print from an amazing wife... what more could I ask for?

For one week every year at the end of March, Miami gets even more crazy when the legendary Winter Music Conference hits town. Hundreds of Djs come in from around the world and mix literally everywhere. Clubs, stores, pools, rooftops, hotel lobbies... you name it. To me, the best parties are the ones that take a bit of work to seek out. I'll pass on anything going on or even near Mansion, Prive, Nikki Beach, Space, or any of the other big name spots. After being out a few nights in a row, I headed down to O.H.W.O.W. in the middle of nowhere Miami to check out the Mad Decent vs. Turntablelab party. Now, I went to their party last year and it was unreal... music by Spankrock, South Rakkas, Eli Escobar, Cosmo Baker, Blaqstarr, and Drop The Lime... and at one point I was dancing and looked around to see Juiceboxxx, Mark Ronson, Roxy Cottontail and Dj Sega all just there for the party. Anyway, I got there this year and checked out the photos in the gallery courtesy of Hamburger Eyes.

Over on the warehouse side, in addition to free Red Stripe, things were just getting going around midnight

The Trouble & Bass crew, who get my vote for mvp this year, absolutely destroyed the place as they took turns mixing records, jumping around stage, and fixing their pompadors.

It was a real lose-your-shit type crowd and things really got nuts when Dj Sega hopped out of the crowd and dropped a thouroughly gutter Baltimore club set. Gotta say that I was loving every minute of this one considering there were a bunch of tracks I haven't heard since back on Charles St

Alright, so the night has been ridiculous so far, but here is where things take a turn for the worst. It's not 3am and the other scheduled acts are Spankrock and Diplo. Now keep in mind that WMC parties are notorious for having names on flyers and then having no-shows... in fact, a lot of Djs will have their name on 3 or 4 different flyers on the same night, and just show up to whatever one they want. SO, having this in mind, in addition to the fact that I've seen Spankrock a bunch of times, AND that I just saw Diplo the night before and it was marred by sound problems and long run out instrumental records.... I figure I won't be missing much and I decide to take off. Turns out after I leave, Rusko hops on and almost brings the roof down with (get this) Cham MCing.... THEN, Diplo finally shows up and drops what I hear was an insane set with none other than Lil Jon on the mic. Huh?!?! For the record, I don't really like Lil Jon, but you've gotta respect the ridiculous fantasticness of it all. The cops shut it down at 5am, about an hour after I'd hit my pillow.

So with that, this years WMC and the Turntablelab/Mad Decent party both come to an end... leaving me to wait for next year, when you'd better believe I'm staying out until they turn the speakers off, just so I don't miss anything.

Every so often I'll post up some records that I'm really into for the time being. I know a lot of dj's who'll cover thier labels so people don't steal ideas for records they found... but I can let you in on a few of my secret weapons.... first off is brand new from Rusko called "Sound guy is my target." This cat is getting some serious play in the UK... hasn't really hit the states but it will soon...
Next up is a DnB tune from Danny Byrd called "Gold Rush." Even if you don't like drum n Bass, give this one a minute and you'll see why it destroys late night dance floors. Perfectly chopped vocals on this one...
Finally a yet-to-be-released record from Curses! (aka Drop The Lime) titled "What I Need." I caught DTL, Star Eyes, and the other cat from Trouble & Bass whose name I can never remember at the Money Studies vs. Turntablelab party a few weeks back in Miami, and they nearly burned the place down when this finally dropped in. Big tune, expect more from Trouble & Bass soon I bet...
Also worth tracking down is Dj Guy "Get Bucked" (a tough juke tune) and Baltimore's own Rye Rye on her first solo release "Bang" with miss M.I.A. on the catchy minimal hook... top notch. That's all for now... catch me this Wednesday on the air for most of those records...

Alright, I'm a pretty voracious music collector, currently with just over 4000 records taking up an entire room in my house. Sometimes it takes a while but I've been able to find every record I've ever really looked for except for one. Where the hell is this friggin thing? The track I'm looking for is "Savin All My Love" by T2, which from what I've seen, was only released on this Nocturnal Dubs Ep. I've looked everywhere here and overseas, and anywhere that they might have ever had it, it's long gone. I'm completely perplexed.

I have been fortunate enough to visit some of the most renowned art museums and galleries around the world. The MOMA and the Guggenheim in NYC, the MOCA in LA, the Louvre and the Musee D'Orsay in Paris to name a few. I have seen many of the masterpieces and they are definately amazing, but I honestly have just as much interest and get possibly even more enjoyment from urban art. Now to be clear, there is a difference between a kid tagging a subway car with a paint pen, and what I would consider Urban Art that is purposefully placed and thought provoking. Obviously, the most well known urban artist (even though we still don't know exactly who he is) would be the UK's Banksy... although he lost a bit in my mind when he sold several pieces to Angelina Jolie... but thats another discussion for another day. One such American artist is Michael DeFeo, who's flower design can be seen from the 7 train on the north side coming out of Queens. Is it just graffiti? Many people might argue so, but in my opinion it's art.
Truly on of the most amazing urban art projects is Urban Blooz which is said to be, "a direct attack towards the incesant invasion of advertising in our daily lives." Billboards and signs are painted over but from just the right angle, blend into the background environment. Makes you think about what art really is.

I just got word that Milwaukee Mc Juiceboxxx will be releasing the single "100 mph" on the iheartcomix record label soon. This kid completely destroys live shows, managing to plow through songs while climbing trees, scaling stacks of speakers and falling through roofs... and those just happened in the few times that I've seen him. After a string of successful ep's, the Money Lotion crew dropped the much anticipated volume 7! With a history of huge reworks, Rocktagon and Eli decide to this time turn thier attention to... Madonna? The two a-side tracks are barely touched and completely boring, while the b-side serves up Stevie Nicks vocals over a tired old bassline. I feel like this was just a bad idea from the beginning... sort of like the 'popped collar' of ep's.

National record store day.

Yesterday was my second favorite national observance day, which takes a close second just behind groundhogs day and that loveable oversized rodent. The day I am talking about is "national record store day" and supposedly it occurs every April. In observance of this observance, I made my way down to Radio-Active Records which is one of the last outposts in South Florida where you can still buy some quality vinyl. Radio-Active is great and I've got to give it to Mikey R down there who really keeps it in competition with the large evil retail music chains.
I've spent many days digging through dusty stacks at this store... but something about this day was different. The normally relaxed neighborhood environment had been invaded by people who I'm quite sure had no interest in good music. Skinny jeaned psuedo hipsters clammored over the newest Chromeo remix while white hat and poloed frat guys looked for any Bob Marley LP's because they heard on Larry King Live that "vinyl is making a comeback." Middle-aged, loud breathing, sweaty, (and obviously single) fat guys picked through for import Grace Jones records and deleted David Bowie singles, while sixteen year old skater thugs stood around and talked about how Diddy is the best producer ever.
I quickly retired to the back corner where I could dig through obscure 45's in peace, and after scoring some old reggae versions and a new Bonobo 10"... I bid them all a fond fall back and got the F up out of there. I wished Mikey luck and returned home to mark my calendar for next year, wondering all the while if I'd missed out on any deleted David Bowie singles.
